Unlike the month of Rajab, there are peculiar instructions regarding the month of Shabaan in the Sunnah of Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam.
Firstly, although it is not obligatory to fast during this month, it is a Sunnah and Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam is reported to have said that, after Ramadhaan, it is most meritorious to fast during the month of Shabaan.
Shabaan is the month during which a record of our deeds is being presented before Allah Ta’ala. Therefore it is the most favourable month in which we could fast. However, it is important to know that we should not cause any weakness to our bodies by fasting so much that we cause a deficiency in our fasts during the month of Ramadhaan. The fasts of Ramadhaan are compulsory, while the fasts of Shabaan are not. This is important to remember. Being fit and able to endure the fasting of the month of Ramadhaan is of the greatest importance. This is why Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam has suggested that we do not fast in the second half of the month of Shabaan.
